Join The Next Swarajya Heritage Trip To The Grand Temples Of Badami, Aihole And Pattadakal

BySwarajya Staff

“The Chalukyas cut rock like Titans but finished like jewellers,” said art critic Dr M Sheshadri of their unmatched pieces of architectural excellence that grace what was once their capital in North Karnataka.

In the lap of the Mallaprabha river reigned the glorious Badami Chalukyas whose testimony in time in the form of temples that they built in Badami, Pattadakal and Aihole gets the region the tag of being the “cradle of Indian temple architecture”.

A unique style they had which blended that of the north and south and which came to be called the Karnata Dravida style. While Aihole was the capital of the early Chalukyas, Pulakeshin II, the most illustrious ruler during whose reign the kingdom expanded to the whole of the Deccan, made Badami, then known as Vatapi, his capital. He also took on the Pallavas of the south, who he finally lost to bringing the grand Badami Chalukya chapter in history to an end.

Witness all this history etched in stone on our next heritage tour this 12, 13 and 14 October.

The splendid rock-cut architecture, the earliest known surviving evidence of fresco paintings and much more on this trip guided by well-known expert of art history and professor at the department of art history at Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath, Dr Raghavendra Rao H Kulkarni who has worked extensively on Badami Chalukya temples.
