State-run power major NTPC Limited's board has approved an investment of over Rs 11,800 crore for expansion of the power generation capacity of Talcher Thermal project in Odisha.

The Talcher plant is one of the oldest and top-performing thermal power stations in the country and is situated in Odisha's Angul district.

The 1,320-MW planned expansion of the Talcher plant is a brownfield project. The plant currently has four units of 60 megawatt (MW) and two units of 110 MW, taking its total power generation capacity to 460 MW.


Set up by Odisha government, the first stage (240 MW) of Talcher project was commissioned in 1968 while the the second stage (220 MW) in 1982.

The plant was acquired by the NTPC in 1995. Later, NTPC proposed to expand the capacity of the plant by installing two units of 660 MW each.

The expansion project got the approval of the Odisha government in February 2020, reports CNBC-TV18.
