With continuous flooding of the city during monsoons due to clogged drains, bringing the city to a complete standstill, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) plans to hire a consultant to conduct a detailed study of the existing drainage system and define ways to address these challenges in the future.

Officials stated that the authority has issued a request for proposals to engage the agency, with a decision likely to be finalised in 15 days, reports Economic Times.

Apart from studying the drainage system, the consultant will prepare a drainage network plan as part of the Gurugram Development Plan 2031.

This plan will outline measures necessary to enhance the efficiency and capacity of the city's drainage infrastructure, which, fails after the first spell of heavy rain, each year.

The study will examine the capacity of various drains, especially along key routes like NH-48, Pataudi Road, and the Delhi-Rewari railway line, and their discharge into larger systems like the Najafgarh Drain.

As per the report, the plan will address the catchment areas of Leg-I, Leg-II, and the existing town. Secondly, it will examine the catchment area of Leg-III and its downstream regions. Thirdly, the plan will analyse and enhance the drainage system in Manesar. Finally, detailed topographic surveys will help map the city’s landscape and understand how water flows across it.

While such studies have been done in the past, the city continues to face the same challenges, due to poorly planned and executed drainage systems, since the origin of the city.

As the Gurugram continues to grow, with New Gurgaon, Manesar, and other industrial belts expanding, a comprehensive drainage plan and its execution are essential.

Further, the official stated that once a draft plan is ready, the public will be invited to provide feedback, which will be considered before finalising the detailed project report.
