Dharavi Redevelopment Project: DRPPL Seeks Key 15-Acre BKC Plot From MMRDA

Dharavi Redevelopment Project Private Limited (DRPPL), a special purpose vehicle (SPV) created by Maharashtra government and the Adani Group, has sought a 15-acre land lease in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) for five years.

MMRDA is currently considering this request. The land, previously used as a metro works casting yard, is intended for storing heavy machinery essential for the Dharavi redevelopment.

DRPPL is also actively seeking land outside the Dharavi slum area to support the massive project. On 13 March 2024, the Railway Land Development Authority (RLDA) transferred 27.57 acres, including a scrapyard near Mahim station, to DRPPL.

Additionally, DRPPL has requested 12 acres of land from the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking, targeting two bus depots in Sion East — Dharavi and Kalakilla. These depots, built in 1980 and January 2016 respectively, can park about 300 buses.

The 12-acre area also includes the BEST transport division, power supply division offices, staff housing for 60 personnel, and amenities for drivers and conductors.


Dharavi Redevelopment Project

In October 2022, the Maharashtra government floated a global tender for the redevelopment of Asia's biggest slum, Dharavi, spread over 240 hectares of prime land in the heart of the country's commercial capital Mumbai. In November 2022, the Adani Group won the bid to redevelop Dharavi with an initial investment of Rs 5,069 crore.

The redevelopment plans include constructing around 1-1.5 lakh tenements of 350 square feet each for eligible residents.

Through the redesign, the vast expanse of Dharavi slums will be connected to the progressive landscape of Mumbai. This revamped identity of Dharavi will reduce residential differentiation within the city and enable the seamless integration of its residents with the overall city population.
