The redevelopment of Secunderabad Railway Station is moving ahead at a fast pace, with the first phase close to completion.
The railway officials announced that work has been finalised on the foundation, pillars and temporary shelter, and the new temporary booking office is expected to be open later this month (May).
Secunderabad Railway Station is located in the twin cities of Secunderabad-Hyderabad.
Opened on 9 October 1874, Secunderabad Railway Station is a major railway station in the twin cities area and serves as the hub of the South Central Railway (SCR) zone. It is also a commuter rail hub in the Hyderabad urban area.
It is the only NSG1 category station (non-suburban grade-1) on the zone, handling annually more than 20 million passengers.
The station is being redeveloped to meet the increasing demands of passengers fuelled by the growing population of the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
The upgradation work of Secunderabad Railway Station is being undertaken as part of “Major Upgradation of Railway Stations” by the Ministry of Railways at a cost of nearly Rs 720 crore.
The upgraded station will be able to cater to the needs of rail passengers for the next 40 years.
According to South Central Railways (SCR) general manager Arun Kumar Jain, who spoke at the announcement, the redevelopment of Secunderabad Railway Station is in its first stage of completion. He added that the project is being carefully monitored to ensure timely completion of every stage of the plan.
The railway officials overseeing the project confirmed that the works are currently on schedule and are being completed in a phased manner, reports Times Of India.
The SCR officials stated that slab and partition-related works are also in progress, and they expect that the new RPF building will be operational in the coming months.
Award Of Contract
As part of the exercise, the SCR has undertaken the upgradation of Secunderabad station and has awarded the contract to Girdharilal Construction Private Limited in October 2022.
The project has been awarded in EPC mode and is targeted for completion within 36 months, which is, by October 2025.
Secunderabad Railway Station Redevelopment Plan
Under the redevelopment plan, a new three-storey station building encompassing 22,516 square metres will be constructed on the north side. The existing south-side building will be extended and developed with G+3 floors.
The project also involves building a 108-metre-wide, two-storey sky concourse with the first level for passengers and a rooftop plaza on the second level for the general public.
A five-level parking structure has been planned for the station's northern side.
On the south side of the station, a unique subterranean parking lot will also be built. There will be designated entry and exit lanes (drop off and pick up zones). This will guarantee that the vehicles can be moved easily by the departing guests.
A 5,000 kV solar power plant will also be set up as part of the redevelopment project.
The redevelopment of the railway station will not only cater to the growing passenger demands but is also expected to help in the larger economic development of the twin cities. The improved transportation infrastructure will have multiple positive impacts, facilitating growth, and allowing businesses to expand.
This project's redevelopment is expected to be finished by October 2025.
