With the Broad Gauge (BG) route in Northern Railway entirely electrified, the public transporter has completed the electrification in Uttarakhand, a significant milestone in rail traction.

This will improve rail connectivity and the speed of trains in the region. With 85 per cent of route kilometres (RKM) electrified, Indian Railways is rapidly progressing to accomplish Mission 100 per cent electrification.

According to the Railways, complete electrification will reduce fossil fuel consumption to a great extent and it would become the largest green railway network in the world.

Moradabad Division in the Northern zone has achieved 100 per cent electrification in 1,409.14 route kilometres.

At the moment, Moradabad Division runs 40 out of 182 trains on electric traction in the Uttarakhand area, under Moradabad Division.

In the year 2021-22, Moradabad Division has also shown 22 per cent saving in Specific Energy Consumption (SEC) as compared to previous year.

The Railways maintains that switching to electric traction has provided an environment-friendly mode of transport and reduced dependence on imported diesel fuel, thereby saving precious foreign currency and helps reduce its carbon footprint.

It would also reduce the operating cost and haulage of heavier freight trains and longer passenger trains with high haulage capacity of Electric Locomotives, leading to increased throughput.

Besides, it also provides increased sectional capacity by eliminating detention on account of traction change and saving of Specific Energy Consumption.
