Plans Underway To Connect Mumbai's Nariman Point With Delhi - Mumbai Expressway: Nitin Gadkari

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari on Sunday (21 August) said that it is his dream to take citizens from Nariman Point in Mumbai to Delhi in 12 hours.

He informed that 70 per cent of the Delhi-Mumbai Express Highway (DME) has already been completed, and now the ministry has decided to connect Nariman point with DME. He added that this project could be done by Public-Private Partnership (PPP).

Addressing the National Conference for Civil Engineers and Professionals from Allied Industries, organized by the Association of Consulting Civil Engineers (ACCE) in Mumbai, the union minister urged the engineers to find alternatives to cement and other raw materials.

"Glass fibre steel can be used in place of steel. If there is competition, the cost will come down and become reasonable," he said.

"We are making 26 Green Express Highways and Logistics parks of Rs two lakh crores. At the same time, we have many innovative ideas by which we can develop infrastructure further," he added.

Nariman Point - Colaba sea link

This project will be Mumbai's third sea link at the southern tip of Mumbai after the Bandra-Worli and SewriNhava Sheva bridges.

To relieve traffic congestion in Mumbai's southern business district, the 2008 Comprehensive Transport Study (CTS) proposed a Cuffe Parade-Nariman Point bridge.

MMRDA has begun work on connecting the Colaba-Cuffe Parade to the sea link, which will start at Marine Drive.

Colaba and Nariman Point are geographically only a little more than a kilometre apart, but using the city's road network requires going about five kilometres, which can take over 20 minutes during rush hour.

The projected sea link will build a ring road around Mumbai combined with completed, continuing, and planned developments like Eastern Freeway, Mumbai TransHarbour Link, Sewri-Worli connector, and Bandra-Worli Sea Link.
