An India-born eminent mathematician and his wife have given one million USD to University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) to establish a professorship honouring legendary Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.
The university has received the amount from mathematics professor VS Varadarajan and his wife Veda in order to establish the ‘Ramanujan Visiting Professorship’ in his home department, said the varsity in a statement.
This new post shall attract visiting faculty members in Varadarajan’s specialisations of automorphic forms, an essential represenatation and number theory, which has been linked to elementary particles and quantum physics.
The gift is a part of the Centennial Campaign for the UCLA, which is scheduled to conclude in December 2019 during the university’s 100th year, reports Hindustan Times.
Furthermore, UCLA said that Varadarajan’s career included work in various areas of physics and mathematics, and his research has been highly motivated by a “desire to understand the role of symmetry in physics and mathematics.”
