At least 250 police personnel have tested positive for COVID-19 in Mumbai so far who have been deployed for various frontline duties, said Mumbai Commissioner of Police Param Bir Singh.
According to a tweet by ANI, Singh said, very few of them are symptomatic patients and no cop is currently admitted in ICU.
Earlier, three Mumbai cops had passed away after getting infected with the novel coronavirus.
Following which the department had asked all the personnel above 55 years of age to go on paid leave and stay home as those who had died were older than 50 years.
The decision was taken as a precautionary measure for the protection of the police personnel from the age bracket that seems more vulnerable to the deadly virus.
Those aged above 52 but with serious medical conditions like diabetes, hypertension etc were also to follow suit.
Mumbai on Wednesday crossed the 10,000 mark as number of total reported cases rose to 10,714, out of which 412 have succumbed to the virus.
Several cops, healthcare workers including doctors across the country have contracted the virus while working in the frontline duties.
