Canadian opposition leader and Conservative Party MP Andrew Scheer will be visiting India in October to ‘repair and strengthen’ bilateral ties that have been ‘damaged’ following the ‘disastrous’ trip by Canadian Prime Minister (PM) Justin Trudeau.
In a series of tweets, Scheer, the prime ministerial candidate for the Conservative Party, commended India’s rise and wrote that the two nations shared close cultural and symbolic bonds. He called the partnership with India as a ‘key relationship’ that needed to be repaired.
Canada will go to polls in October next year, and the visit is being seen as an attempt to garner support from the Indian diaspora residing in Canada, according to a report in the Times of India.
The Canadian first family toured India in February, but the visit was unfortunately marred by allegations that the Canadian government was allowing Khalistani sympathisers to flourish in the country. Trudeau himself was criticised for alleged cultural appropriation through unappetising displays, with the Canadian PM trying to please the hosts.
