After Trump’s Syria Withdrawal, Bipartisan Support Among US Lawmakers To Sanction Turkey For Invasion Against Kurds

BySwarajya Staff

President Donald Trump has invited the ire of House Republicans who slammed him on Wednesday (9 October) for allowing Turkey to attack the Kurds in Syria. According to Trump, the Kurds did not fight alongside the US in World War II, reports CNN.

Trump said, "They didn't help us in the Second World War, they didn't help us with Normandy for example."

The US president has also assured that Turkey will ensure no humanitarian crisis emerges out of its invasion.

After Trump pulled out US troops from near the Turkish border in Northern Syria, Turkey launched its military operation to flush Kurds out of northeastern Syria sparking outrage in Congress which has created rare bipartisan unity.

The effort is led by Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland. Graham, a Trump ally who believes his sanctions legislation on Turkey will have a veto-proof majority in the Senate, making it impossible for Trump to stop.
