After voting in favour of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 in the Rajya Sabha, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) which is also an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to move to Supreme Court (SC) against its implementation in Assam's districts lying in the Brahmaputra valley, reports Indian Express.
AGP's president and a minister in the Assam Government, Atul Bora said that the party would take the legal route for seeking exemption for the Brahmaputra valley region.
“We will not allow it to be implemented in Assam. We will approach the Supreme Court. A party delegation will soon go to meet the Prime Minister and the Home Minister to urge them to reconsider the new law. We will also appeal to the government that any decision on the law should be taken only after talking to leading organisations (in Assam) like the AASU, AJYCP and others,” senior AGP leader Ramendra Kalita was quoted in the report as saying.
The lone MP of the party in Rajya Sabha Birendra Prasad Baishya had voted in favour of the CAB. The AGP leaders have claimed that the party voted for the bill as the NDA, which they are part of, was supporting it.
