Senior doctors in West Bengal have lend support to the ongoing protest by their junior colleagues by resigning en-masse from medical colleges across the state.

As per media reports, in total 220 doctors have resigned so far which includes resignation from 108 doctors of NRS Medical College and Hospital, 27 doctors from North Bengal Medical College, 69 doctors at RG Kar Medical College and 16 doctors of Calcutta National Medical College.

In various places, the senior doctors were greeted with loud cheers by their protesting juniors after they submitted their resignations.

The first to resign were the Principal and Vice-Principal of NRS Medical College - Saibal Mukherjee and Saurabh Chatterjee.

Earlier, the Calcutta High Court had asked the West Bengal government to negotiate with the protesting doctors and file a reply within seven days. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has also called for withdrawing all non-essential medical services on 17 June.

The protesters have chiefly demanded better security at hospitals including armed policemen after junior doctors were brutally attacked by a large mob in Kolkata’s NRS hospital and medical college over the death of a 75-year-old patient named Mohammed Shahid.

The attack included the 200 strong mob hurling bricks inside the hospitals which hit one of the interns on the head and he suffered serious injuries. He is now said to be out of danger.
