Uttar Pradesh Police have taken into custody a Muslim cleric, Mohammad Ahmed, who was working as a muezzin at a mosque inside the campus of Aligarh Muslim University, for allegedly molesting a minor girl whom he was supposed to tutor, reports The New Indian Express.
The accused is identified as Mohammad Ahmed and has been booked under Sections 376 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code, as well as Clauses 3-4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO).
Ahmed was the victim’s Quran and Urdu tutor, and he is believed to have sexually abused her at her house while he was there to give lessons. He warned the girl not to inform anyone of what had happened.
The victim’s mother filed a police complaint at a ‘tehsil diwas’ once she became aware about the incident. The cleric is believed to have made an admission to the offence while in custody, and it is believed that he molested the victim on four to five occasions.
For their part, AMU officials assert that they’ve already dismissed the accused from his position as a muezzin.
