In Begusarai, a high-pitched poll battle was fought between BJP’s Giriraj Singh and Left’s Kanhaiya Kumar. Former defeated the latter by a huge margin. His supporters had also thrashed protesters who shouted slogans, “Kanhaiya wapas jao” (Go back Kanhaiya).
Since the historic win of BJP in recent Lok Sabha polls, party workers are being targeted. In Rahul Gandhi’s bastion Amethi, where Smriti Irani won with 55,000 votes, her close aide was shot dead while sleeping. In a spurt of post poll violence, BJP workers lost their lives in West Bengal and Tripura as well.
In Maharashtra, BJP Minority Cell worker Mateen Patel was beaten to death and a Congress leader was booked for the crime. Several members of minority communities, including many Muslim women and Dalits also faced violence at the hands of family and community members for voting for BJP.
Recently, PM Modi paid respects to the BJP workers who died in poll-violence in West Bengal by inviting them to his oath-taking ceremony yesterday.
