The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to make Arts subjects mandatory for all classes from the next academic session, reports Hindustan Times. Schools affiliated to the board will have to spare a minimum of two periods per week for these subjects.

Currently, Arts subjects are divided into four spheres, namely music, dance, visual arts and theatre. The board wants to add culinary art as a subject as well, for students studying in classes 6 to 8.

“The exposure will help students learn the value of nutritious food, about the crops and spices grown in India, how oil is extracted from various seeds and good agricultural practices,” a board official stated.

He added that traditional foods will also find a place in the new subject.

Schools will also have the autonomy to decide on their own processes for the new subject but will have to ensure a safe and fun classroom environment.

The board’s decision was taken in consultation with stakeholders like schools, principals, teachers, art professionals and the NCERT.
