In a major move towards pacifying the agitators protesting against the newly made amendments to the Citizenship Act by the Parliament, the Government of Assam led by Chief Minister (CM) Sarbananda Sonowal is set to introduce legislation barring non-indigenous persons from buying land in the State, reports Indian Express.

The decision of the State Government is aimed at dispersing the indigenous population's fear of an influx of migrants into Assam, which may compromise Assamese culture and identity.

The developments come after the All Assam Students Union (AASU) accused Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah and CM Sonowal of misleading people that their identity, language and land are protected.
