Attendance Registers May Soon Be History In Tamil Nadu; Face Recognition To Mark Student Presence In Schools

BySwarajya Staff

Teachers taking attendance in school registers might soon be a thing of past in Tamil Nadu, as the state government is planning to introduce Artificial Intelligence-based attendance systems through face reading at a government school for girls, reports Times of India.

To be introduced on a pilot basis, the face recognition application would have relevant data of students stored in the database. The teacher would take a picture, which the Artificial Intelligence-based application would analyse and identify the absentees. This data would be then recorded and added to the database.

The success of the system is essential as there are plans to expand the system to other schools soon in the entire state rapidly. “The newly launched Artificial Intelligence-enabled attendance system through face reading is being implemented for the first time in India,” said School Education Minister K A Sengottaiyan. He said such systems were commonplace in the United States and Japan.
