BBMP Plans Wearable ‘Raksha Band’ For Women’s Safety

A proposal by the Bruhath Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) aims to enure that women in Bengaluru get a wrist band to keep them safe, reports the Times of India. The wearable module will help women in trouble alert their close ones along with a central monitoring agency by moving their arm in a particular way. The band, nicknamed the Raksha Band after the Raksha Bandhan, will be funded by the Centre under the Nirbhaya fund.

The Rs 100 crore proposal has already been sent to the Centre under the safe-city proposal. BBMP Commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad said that the band would be available at a cost of Rs 300. The band would be connected to an app that will allow the wearer to add the contact details of five people and will automatically take photographs and images of the surroundings when activated and send them to the central server. The BBMP intends to distribute one million bands over the next three years.
