Bellandur, a suburb in south-east Bengaluru, has contributed the largest share towards BBMP’s property tax collections for the 2018-19 fiscal year, reports Citizen Matters.
While the suburb, home to a significant number of IT companies, accounts for only 3.6 per cent of the area under BBMP, it provided for more than 5 per cent of the total collections. In absolute figures, Rs 103 crore out of Rs 1926 crore came from properties located in Bellandur in FY19.
It should be noted that Bellandur has been consistently the top property taxpayer for the last three years. Out of the total Rs 2,729 crore in taxes collected by BBMP between 2016-17 and 2018-19 in 198 wards, Bellandur ward provided Rs 282 crore over the three years. The lowest collections of Rs 69 lakh were from Chalavadipalya ward.
IT Parks Lead The Way
Also, the top five wards - Bellandur, ward 150; Shanthala Nagar, ward 111; Thanisandra, ward 6; Doddanekkundi, ward 85; and Garudacharpalya, ward 2 - together contributed 1,012 crores or 18.6 per cent of the total tax collected.
Except for Shantala Nagar located in the centre of the city, most of the top wards are in newly developed peripheral areas. This could be due to their large size and presence of a large number of commercial buildings including corporate offices and tech parks.
