A feasibility report produced by Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) has identified four corridors- Bengaluru City-Rajanukunte, Kengeri-Whitefield, Heelalige-Devanahalli, Nelamangala-Baiyappanahalli- to add more number of stations for the 161 km suburban railway network in Bengaluru.
As of now, 29 stations exist on the line and the report has proposed 52 new stations along the corridors. 17 stations are planned to be made equipped with interchange facilities, 12 of them having rail-metro interchange and five with rail-rail interchange facility. To focus exclusively on suburban services, two dedicated tracks have been proposed for the rail network, The New Indian Express reported.
Automatic fare collection system has also been proposed for the suburban rail. Out of the 81 stations, 10 of different categories have been identified for planning and intermodal integration. However, for the draft report, only four stations have been considered.
The new 52 proposed stations include eight on Kengeri-Whitefield, seven on Bengaluru City-Rajanukunte, 16 on Nelamangala-Baiyappanahalli and 21 on Heelalige-Devanahalli corridor.
The rail-metro interchange will come up at Kengeri station on the Kengeri-Whitefield corridor. Bengaluru City-Rajanukunte and Kengeri-Whitefield corridor will have two types of interchanges - rail-rail and rail-metro - at Bengaluru city station.
Bengaluru City-Rajanukunte and Nelamangala-Baiyappanahalli corridors will meet at Lottegollahalli station interchange.
