Big News For Game Of Throne Fans: HBO Plans Prequel, Filming Of Pilot To Begin In June

BySwarajya Staff

Game of Thrones (GoT) fans may very well have reason for cheer after the series concludes with its current and final eighth season, as HBO, the television network behind the show, is looking to produce a GoT prequel, reports AP.

"I think they need a prestige show on this level to remain HBO," Bill Carter, a media analyst for CNN.

HBO’s corporate owner, AT&T, has also poured in massive resources into original programming, with programmes independently produced by the network slated to rise by 50 per cent just this year.

The cable network is faced with cut-throat competition from the likes of online video-on-demand giants like Netflix and Hulu, which are known for the production of high quality original content.

Thus, an untitled prequel to GoT is scheduled to start shooting its pilot in June. It will be created by Martin and Jane Goldman, with actress Naomi Watts being roped in to star in the new show. Other GoT spinoffs are also being considered, with ongoing talks over how many would be ‘too many’.
