In a bid to improve the road infrastructure in the border areas, the Border Road Organisation(BRO) is building many large and medium-sized bridges to improve road infrastructure on the strategically important Leh-Manali highway, reports The Times of India.
Since, expansive railway network in the Ladakh region is still a faraway dream, the BRO plans to strengthen road infrastructure by building new bridges, and securing landslides, avalanche and flood-prone stretches. The defence organisation also plans to replace old bridges along Manali-Leh highway with heavy-duty bridges, a girder bridge with a 40m span on the Beas to nullah.
The area, according to officials is prone to glaciers and floods, where a removable bridge was replaced by the BRO this winter. The new bridge is, however, reported to withstand all natural calamities and is permanent, says reports.
“BRO additional Director General Mohan Lal will inaugurate the bridge on Saturday (15 December). The bridge will play an important role in allowing smooth traffic on the highway.” 38 Border Road Task Force commander Col A K Awasthi was quoted saying by TOI.
The 300 m long bridge at Darcha in Lahaul is expected to open traffic by the next year and would be the longest in Leh-Manali highway. The bridge will also facilitate vehicles bound for Zanskar valley in Ladakh via newly built Darcha- Padum road will be extended till Nimmoo in the middle of Leh and Kargil.
