China Loves Haryana: State Becomes Neighbour’s Favourite Destination To Import Rice

India has exported 100 tonnes of non-Basmati rice to China, post opening of trade by Beijing, with Haryana being the top exporter among states, The Tribune has reported.

Exporters in India are also working on supplying another 500 tonnes of rice in the near future with a major share of it coming from Haryana.

Haryana tops the list of suppliers approved by China for export of non-Basmati rice in the northern states. China has approved 20 suppliers out of which 12 mills are from Haryana. Other northern states include Punjab with four mills, Uttar Pradesh with two and Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir with one each.

Usage of state-of-the-art technology across all stages, from processing to storage, is the main reason why mills in Haryana and Punjab see Chinese traders rushing towards them for the export of rice.

Vijay Setia, president of All India Rice Exporters Association, said that the northern region, especially Haryana and Punjab, has been a major supplier of Basmati rice internationally.

He said that the millers in Haryana and Punjab have an edge over other states as they have made significant investments in modernisation of their facilities in order to meet stringent norms of importing countries.

The first consignment of the non-Basmati rice was shipped this year in September from Nagpur.
