The Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry confirmed on Saturday that a consignment of geographical indication (GI) certified Fazil mangos from the Malda district of West Bengal have been exported to Bahrain.

Apparently, a mango promotion program spanning across an entire week was conducted in Bahrain last month. In that, around 16 varieties of mangoes that comprised of three GI certified ones, namely: Lakshmanbhog and Khirsapatin from West Bengal along with Zardalu from Bihar were displayed.

Meanwhile, the ministry also said that the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has associated with the Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) along with other exporters, traders, agriculture scientists and even the Uttar Pradesh state government to promote the agricultural crops and their adherence to global practices.

The GI certification means that the names of the products are made exclusive, which prevents other sellers from misusing the names to market goods that are similar to the original one. This in turn ends up benefitting the producers as they are able to obtain premium prices for their products.

However, this tag is provided to a natural, agricultural or manufactured product that stems from a specific geographical territory. The certification tends to provide quality assurance along with uniqueness that is traceable to the place of origin of that product, Economic Times reports.
