DeMo Controversy: Bank With Amit Shah As Director Files Defamation Case Against Rahul Gandhi 

The Ahmedabad District Co-operative Bank, which has Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Amit Shah as a director, has filed a defamation case against Congress President Rahul Gandhi and party spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala for claiming that Rs 746 crore worth old notes were exchanged by the bank in the first five days after the announcement of demonetisation in 2016.

In its plea, filed in a court in Ahmedabad on Monday, the bank has said that two leaders had levelled 'false and defamatory' allegations against it.

Earlier, the Congress spokesperson had claimed that the chairman of the bank is a “close associate” of Shah.

Surjewala had said that the RTI reply had “exposed an attempt to convert black into white money in the guise of demonetisation”. Allegations were made after the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development had issued a response to a Right To Information query filed by a Mumbai-based activist.

According to BJP’s IT cell in-charge Amit Malviya, Rs 746 crore worth of notes were deposited by 1.6 lakh account holders.

This development comes after Anil Ambani’s Reliance filed a defamation case against the Congress and one of its leaders from Gujarat for alleging corruption in Dassault Aviation’s deal with the Indian company’s defence arm.
