A resolution adopted at the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party meet claimed that 248 people had died of ‘shock’ after knowing about the failing health and death of late DMK leader M Karunanidhi.
According to a Hindustan Times report, the party also announced Rs 2 lakh compensation for the families of each of the deceased party workers during its general council meeting.
Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi passed away on 7 August, with his son M K Stalin now having taken over the party. The DMK had fought to secure burial space for their leader on Marina beach after the government had refused to the demand.
In the party meet, Stalin said, “We are not against (God) believers”, in a move to de-link his party from staunch rationalism. He added that his father had appreciated his hard work and he would continue his work till the end. The party meet also elected S Duraimurugan as treasurer.
Although, Stalin was elected unopposed in the party meeting, a succession battle might be brewing with elder brother M K Alagiri having earlier declared that DMK loyalists were with him.
