Eager To Win Back Hindu Votes? Mamata Calls Out Minority Extremism, Offers Prayers At Cooch Behar’s Madan Mohan Temple

Mamata Banerjee, in a speech to her party workers meeting in Cooch Behar, warned people against “minority extremism”, although without naming any group or in particular, reports The Times Of India.

Mamata addressing a Trinamool workers meet said: “I am watching that there are some extremists among the minorities. They have their base in Hyderabad. Don’t listen to them.”

After the meeting Mamata went to the Madan Mohan Temple in Cooch Behar to offer her prayers before she went to the Rash Mela on the Rajbari gorunds.

Political observers think Mamata’s comment against “minority extremism” is in response to the success Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had in 2019 General Election and now it is time to make overtures to the Hindus in West Bengal before the assembly election.

Her offering prayer at Madan Mohan Temple is also being interpreted as an eager bid to win over Hindu votes, both Bengali and Rajbanshi, who hold the key in Coochbehar.

In her speech to party workers, Mamata appealed to them maintain unity in the face of the BJP, “I appeal to the Trinamool leaders to close ranks and take up challenge against BJP. Our activists are the party’s assets. I would ask you not to work for groups under leaders. Work for the flag you hold. There should be an end to Trinamool leaders making comments against each other. The party is not going to swallow the poison they spit. I am happy that Trinamool MLAs, councillors are working together as a team now. The party wouldn’t have lost seats if they did it earlier.”
