In one of the closely-watched contests this election, BJP leader Giriraj Singh has bagged 110251 votes in Begusarai (Bihar), accounting for a vote share of around 51.66 per cent.
Former president of the student's union of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate Kanhiya Kumar is trailing with 54,951 seats, a vote share of 25 per cent.
Singh's lead is impressive because Begusarai has had a long history of being a Communist bastion. In the 2019 election, the constituency registered a voting percentage of 61.27 per cent, two per cent higher than the last election.
The Delhi police on 14 January had filed a chargesheet against Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and others over Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) sedition row, almost three years after the incident.
