Elgar Parishad Case: Nine Urban Naxals Booked For Plotting To Kill PM Modi, Waging War Against India

The Maharashta state prosecution has submitted its draft charges against nine alleged Urban Naxals who have been named as accused in the Elgar Parishad violence case, Times of India has reported.

The draft charges submitted to the special Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) court include plans to hatch a “conspiracy to murder Prime Minister Modi”, “waging war against the country” and “acts of terrorism”.

The charges allege that a total of 19 accused were planning on assassinating Prime Minister Modi during one of his road shows.

A total of 16 charges will now come up before the court for hearing, following which it will take a call on which ones will eventually be framed against the accused. Trial will begin in the matter after this exercise.

The 19 accused include human rights lawyers, academics and writers with alleged links to Maoists, five members of leftist Kabir Kala Manch and five Maoist operatives who are yet to be arrested.

The Elgar Parishad event held on 31 December 2017 which is said to have provoked the Bhima-Koregaon violence is said to have been funded by the Maoists to create unrest and overthrow the government.
