Environment Minister Leaves The Door Open For A Ban On PETA

Environment Minister Anil Dave hinted that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) may be shown the door, following growing calls for banning the group that sparked the Jallikattu row.

“PETA, is an NGO, funded by foreign countries. They always rake up these issues. We will see as to what can be done,” Dave said, when asked whether the Centre will ban the animal rights organisation after the people of Tamil Nadu held them responsible for the clamp on the traditional bull-taming sport.

The minister expressed hopes that the bull-taming sport will be conducted in a peaceful manner after an ordinance proposed by the state was cleared. However,
in what could add to the already growing controversy over the bull taming sport, TV reports suggest that two people have been killed at a state sponsored Jallikattu event in Tamil Nadu's Pudukottai district. More information is awaited.

The traditional and popular bull-taming sport was held in three places in Madurai district on Sunday morning. The state government has also filed a caveat in the Supreme Court that will entitle it to be heard in case the ordinance is challenged.
