Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman while presenting the Finance Budget on Saturday (1 February) announced a Rs 18,600 crore plan to build an extensive 140 km Bengaluru suburban railway network.
The centre will contribute 20 per cent of the funds towards this project and 60 per cent will be raised via external agencies. When complete, the fares on this network will be at par with metro.
Suburban railway is a much delayed and awaited urban transportation plan for Bengaluru which is struggling to cater to the ever increasing demand via its existing public transport infra.
