A woman in Uttar Pradesh has alleged that she was raped by her father-in-law, after being forced to undergo Nikah Halala, Press Trust of India has reported.
Nikah Halala is a controversial Islamic practice which requires a woman to get married to another man, consummate the marriage and then leave him, only after which she can remarry her former husband.
According to the victim, she was thrown out of her in-laws’ on 25 December 2015. A case had been registered on 06 January 2016. Later that year in the month of December, she went back to her in-laws’ to resolve the disputes.
According to her, she got married to her father-in-law with the recommendation of the two clerics. She was then forcefully locked her in a room, and got divorced in the morning, following which she was raped by her husband. This incident has led to pregnancy, she says.
On Sunday (2 September), the Uttar Pradesh police said that five arrests have been made in the matter so far. This includes the father-in-law, husband and two unidentified clerics.
Bareilly zonal Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Prem Prakash said that the woman hails from Moradabad district and she was married in December 2014.
In October 2017, she gave birth to a baby boy and went on to live with her parents. She then submitted an application to the District Magistrate. Due to her actions, she alleges that she has been facing death threats.
The police have now registered a case of gang-rape on 1 September. Further action is underway.
