Former Congress leader S M Krishna, who served as the country’s Minister of External Affairs from 2009 to 2012 under the United Progressive Alliance government, will be joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), said Karnataka BJP president B S Yeddyurappa today (4 February).
Krishna, who was the Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1999 to 2004, had quit the Congress party on 29 January, and called it a “very painful moment”. He had said,
A situation has now come wherein I have to leave the home in which I resided peacefully for the last 46 years.
Krishna’s switch from Congress to the BJP is expected to have some consequences for both the parties in the state since the former chief minister is still very influential in Bengaluru, Mysuru and Mandya regions. It’s also likely to have an impact, therefore, on the assembly election that will be held across the state in 2018.
