Gujarat: Teacher At Convent School Cuts Off Rakhis From Students’ Wrists, Probe Ordered

BySwarajya Staff

The Gujarat government has sought an explanation from a school in Gandhinagar over the allegations of a teacher cutting off Rakhis from the students' wrist.

Times of India reported that some parents complained to the education department that a teacher at Mount Carmel High School had cut off Rakhis tied on the students' wrists with scissors. This, the parents complained, happened a day after Rakshabandhan festival.

Gujarat education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said that a notice has been sent to the school. ”The incident was unwarranted. We will not tolerate any act which hurts religious sentiments”, he said. Referring to the notice sent to the school, the minister added that the government would decide the matter after getting a reply from the school.

The Hindustan Times reported that activists of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and Vishwa Hindu Parishad protested outside the school over the alleged incident. The report says, “ABVP leader Rishikesh Mandalia claimed that when the protesters confronted the school management, they denied that such an incident happened”.
