Delhi University officials on Wednesday (6 January) said that the university would be increasing the seats for economically weaker sections (EWS) by 10 per cent from the next academic year, the New Indian Express reports.
All higher educational institutions and universities in the country are directed to increase around 25 per cent seats by the Human Resource Department (HRD) Ministry, who will execute 10 per cent reservation for the economically weaker sections in the general category from the 2019-20 academic year.
The decision was made in the admissions committee meeting, and the varsity will effect the increase in two phases – 10 per cent in the first year and the rest 15 per cent in the next year.
A committee will be formed to work on the changes regarding the increase in seat sources said, while adding that currently there will not be many changes in infrastructure, and the existing classrooms will be used to accommodate the new students.
Officials said that a mechanism to avoid the duplication of registration data would be developed, and there will be centralised admissions per children/widows of Armed forces (CW) category.
The university to finish the admissions before the start of the academic year will be uploading a video on its website on the method to fill the admission forms and filled dummy forms will also be available on the university’s website.
Officials said that the university would be starting a special drive for student admissions from North East states and the ‘Bulletin of Information’ will be available in both English and Hindi. Among other universities, the Jawaharlal Nehru University also said that it would increase the seats by 25 per cent in the coming academic year.
