The Union Human Resource and Development (HRD) Ministry has communicated a proposal to President Ram Nath Kovind to initiate a ‘visitorial inquiry’ against the vice-chancellor (VC) of Allahabad University R L Hangloo for alleged irregularities under his administration, reports The Indian Express.
Previously, Hangloo was served with a show-cause notice in 2016 for alleged financial, academic and administrative irregularities. The HRD ministry did not find his response satisfying and is thus moving forward with the said visitorial inquiry.
The VC had been designated to his current office in 2015 when Smriti Irani was heading the HRD ministry.
Hangloo is accused of making unlawful appointments to posts such as Official on Special Duty and sports trainer, which don’t exist in reality.
It has also been alleged that he misrepresented expenses such as a monthly expense of Rs 10 lakh on personal security for himself while another Rs 70 lakh was ostensibly spent on repairing his residence.
Moreover, Hangloo is accused of mismanaging the entrance exams for the university’s undergraduate, post-graduate and research batches while also creating an ‘unhealthy atmosphere’ which included an environment of gender inequality on the campus.
