Hyderabad Metro Rail To Set Up 300 Rainwater Harvesting Structures Across Entire Route

The Larsen and Toubro Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (L&T HMRL) which operates the elevated rapid transit network in Hyderabad on Sunday (29 April) announced that it is planning a dual-purpose rainwater harvesting system to recharge depleting groundwater levels and take care of water-logging on roads, reports The Hindu Business Line.

As part of the Jalam Jeevam project being spearheaded by Information Technology and Municipal Administration minister K T Rama Rao, HMRL will construct 300 harvesting structures – 100 with injection borewells at the edges of the road and 200 without injection borewells – that can each store 5,000 litres or one tanker-full of water.

The harvesting system will be set up across the entire network of the metro and work has already started after identifying low-lying areas along the corridor where water gets accumulated.

Each structure will be 14 feet long, eight feet wide and deep. It will consist of two layers of broken granite with coarse sand spread over them. It is then walled off and covered with a concrete slab for vehicles to drive over it.
