Improving Access To Higher Education: Cabinet Approves 13 New Central Universities, To Be Set Up In Three Years

The Union Cabinet on 16 January gave its nod to set-up 13 new central universities at an estimated cost of Rs 3,600 crore, reports Press Trust of India.

The new Central universities will be established in Gujarat, Bihar, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Punjab, Rajasthan, Kerala, Odhisa and Jharkhand. The eleven out of twelve states would get one University each whereas Jammu and Kashmir would get two.

The work would be completed within three years and the finds would be be used for the creation of necessary infrastructure at the campuses.

As per Union Minister Piyush Goyal the Cabinet has also given an approval for Rs 1,474.65 crore over and above the aforementioned funds.

The minister said the move will increase access to higher education and set exemplary standards for other universities to emulate and will help in minimising regional imbalances in educational facilities.
