India-Israel Defence Cooperation: DRDO Test Fires Surface-To-Air Missile Jointly Developed With Israel

India successfully test fired a new, long-range surface-to-air missile, as a part of its effort to bolster its air defence capabilities. Jointly developed with Israel, the missile was test launched from a mobile launcher at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur at around 10:13 hours. The scientists from DRDO, who monitored the launch, stated that the trial was successful and some more rounds of test will be conducted shortly.

The missile will be a part of the sophisticated air defence network being designed to destroy incoming aircraft and missiles. “Apart from the missile, the system includes a Multi Functional Surveillance and Threat Alert Radar (MF STAR) for detection, tracking and guidance of the missile,” the Indian Express quoted the officials as saying.

Earlier this year, the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) had conducted three successful tests of medium-range surface-to-air missiles, jointly developed with Israel. The tests are in line with the government’s policy of improving air defence capabilities in wake of increasing threat from nuclear-armed adversaries surrounding the country.

After all trials are conducted successfully, these missiles will be inducted in all three services- the army, navy and air force.
