India Successfully Test-Fires Nag Anti-Tank Guided Missile In Rajasthan

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Tuesday successfully test-fired Anti-Tank Guided Missile Nag in the western sector of Rajasthan. Nag is one of five missile systems developed by the DRDO under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program at a cost of Rs 3 billion (US$46.6 million).

The fire-and-forget 3rd generation missile is equipped with many advanced technologies including an Imaging Infrared Radar Seeker with integrated avionics, a capability which is possessed by few nations in the world. The missile can be launched during both day and night.

The land-launched version of the missile has a range of 4 km and the air-launched version has a range of 7 to 10 km. In July 2009, Nag was cleared for production after successful summer trials in Rajasthan.

The tests, which were witnessed by scientists from the DRDO, Defence Lab, Jodhpur, and senior officials from armed forces, concluded on Tuesday. G Satheesh Reddy, the scientific adviser to the defence minister and DG (missiles and strategic systems), who also witnessed the launch, said the successful flight test has strengthened the country's defence capabilities.
