India To Get 12 More Nuclear Power Plants, Says Secretary Of Department Of Atomic Energy

Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) K N Vyas has stated that 12 more nuclear plants will be established in India in order to improve power generation capacity and allow for a smooth supply of electricity for both industrial and residential use, reports ET Energyworld.

Vyas is also the chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India.

"Nuclear technology helps in betterment of lives through varied usages and is an irreplaceable source of clean, pollution-free energy," stated Vyas at the 11th International Forum AtomExpo 2019 held in Sochi, Russia.

Commenting on the record performance of India’s Kaiga Nuclear Power Station, he revealed that the indigenously developed small 220-250MW reactor at the plant had been successfully operational for 962 days, running at approximately 99.3 per cent capacity.

He stated that India’s indigenous nuclear power programme had now reached18 operational Press Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs).

The nuclear body official added that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government had given the green light for the construction of 10 more PHWRs in fleet mode, and plans were being made for developing two light water reactors.
