Indian Railways To Soon Begin Manufacturing ‘Make In India’ Metro Coaches In Rae Bareli 

Indian Railways will be manufacturing Metro train coaches in its Rae Bareli facility for the first time, Economic Times has reported. This will also be the first time that the Indian Railways will be using robots for manufacturing the coaches.

Currently, Indian metro trains use coaches manufactured by Bombardier, as per the report, and the ‘Make In India’ coaches will be at par with those manufactured by Bombardier.

These ‘Make In India’ metro coaches will be 40 per cent cheaper and will have facilities like CCTV cameras, WiFi and mobile charging units according to an official who spoke to Economic Times. It will also have safety features that include signalling, door control and train management systems.

The Indian coaches will reportedly cost Rs 8 crore and will hence be more economical than the coaches produced in China and other countries which cost Rs 12 crore approximately.

Rajesh Agarwal, a Railway Board member who spoke to Economic Times said that the Maharashtra government had agreed to purchase coaches for two metro lines. He added that the investment to make this project a reality would be Rs 480 crore.
