In a large scale move, the Tamil Nadu government is going to rename more than 3,000 locations in the state, India Today has reported. The renaming includes Triplicane to Thiruvallikeni, Tuticorin to Thoothukudi, Trichy to Tiruchirappalli and Poonamalle to Poovirundhavalli.
All the 32 districts set up a joint committee to finalise the names for 3,000 places suggest by historians and Tamil scholars. Minister for Tamil Official Language and Tamil Culture K Pandiarajan said that the government order would be issued in two weeks and soon the places will be renamed.
Narayanan Thirupathy, a BJP spokesperson, said that this is a good move and should have happened long back and the names of places should have meaning.
“Every street or villages should exemplify the history of the place. For example, there is this place called Thiruvallikeni, but in English, it has been changed to Triplicane. Similarly, Poonamallee was originally called Pooirundavalli, and the new name has no meaning at all. The new generation should understand these names. " he added.
