‘Iron Lady’ Irom Sharmila Fails At The Polls, Loses Thoubal Seat To Chief Minister Ibobi Singh

'Iron Lady' of Manipur and PRAJA (Peoples' Resurgence and Justice Alliance) chief, Irom Chanu Sharmila, today (11 March) lost from Thoubal constituency, where she was contesting against incumbent Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh.

Earlier in the day, Sharmila had said that in case of defeat she would try again in the 2019 general elections. She had told ANI,

I do not feel much affected by the result. It depends upon the people’s mindset. I don’t feel much affected by it, because people can still change their minds and everybody knows muscle and money power is being openly used by parties.

However, it’s now come to light that Sharmila has decided to quit politics, as reported by Times Now.

After ending her 16-year-long hunger strike last year, the longest such strike ever, the civil rights activist decided to enter politics and contest elections. However, today, she suffered a humiliating defeat, securing less than 100 votes for the Thoubal seat, which went to the state’s Chief Minister.
