The prime suspect in the Kanpur train derailment that occurred in November 2016 killing 140 people has been arrested by a special team of the Nepal Police at Tribhuvan International Airport at Kathmandu, Nepal. Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agent Shamshul Hoda was arrested after being deported from Dubai earlier.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Pashupati Upadhyaya of the Nepal Police said that they had received information about Hoda’s involvement in a rail accident in India. Three other men, Brij Kishor Giri, Ashish Singh and Umesh Kumar Kurmi, all from southern Nepal's Kalaiya district have also been arrested with help from Interpol after being deported from Dubai. Hoda is believed to be behind several criminal activities including a twin murder in Bara district of Nepal according to local police.

A team of Indian police officers and officers of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) have reached Nepal, reported Doordarshan News. A case against Hoda has already been lodged in a district court in Bara. The role of the Pakistani intelligence was suspected in January 2017 after the Bihar Police arrested three men claiming to work for the ISI to target the Indian Railways.
