It’s Elephantastic: First Dedicated Jumbo Care Hospital Of India Opens Near Taj Mahal

BySwarajya Staff

In a first, Indian elephants now have their own fully equipped hospital near the Taj Mahal, which has facilities like wireless digital X-Ray, laser treatment and dental X-ray. This development is a result of the collaboration between the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department (UPFD) and NGO Wildlife SOS.

The facility is in the Farah block of Mathura, located near Agra.

The veterinary hospital has modern medical facilities for the treatment of elephants in distress including thermal imaging, ultrasonography, hydrotherapy, tranquilization equipment and quarantine facilities.

Wildlife SOS founder Kartick Satyanarayan said, “The Wildlife SOS Elephant Hospital is setup to treat elephants which are injured, sick or geriatric and is equipped with a special medical hoist for lifting elephants requiring critical care, a pathology laboratory, digital weighing scale, Elephant Restraining Device (ERD) with a dedicated indoor treatment facility for longer medical procedures” as reported by The Hindu.

Wildlife SOS established the ECCC in 2010, which is currently providing lifetime care and treatment for over 20 rehabilitated pachyderms, who have been rescued from circuses and illegal captivities where they were ill-treated and subjected to cruelty. The Elephant Hospital was built entirely with the aide of private donations and CSR support.
