Japan Backs India’s Development Projects In Northeast; To Provide Rs 13,000 Crore In Funding

Following a meeting between the Minister of Development of North Eastern Region Dr Jitendra Singh and a delegation headed by Japanese Ambassador Kenji Hiramatsu, it has been revealed that Japan will be investing approximately Rs 13,000 crore in development projects in the Northeast.

The funds will go to existing as well as new projects. Some of the major projects in which Japan will play role are the Guwahati Water Supply Project, Northeast Road Network Connectivity Improvement Project spanning Meghalaya and Assam, Sustainable Forest Management Project in Tripura and the Technical Cooperation Project for Sustainable Agriculture & Irrigation in Mizoram.

Singh also added that in the future, the two countries may also cooperate in new areas, one of which might be bamboo. Interestingly, the Indian Forest Act 1919 had been amended during the NDA government to remove bamboo from the types of flora including in its ambit.
