All the four convicts in the Nirbhaya rape and murder case were hanged today at 5.30 am on Friday (20 March) morning at the Tihar Jail.
The hanging came after a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court dismissed the petition of one of the convicts, Pawan Gupta, to stay their execution in a last-minute hearing, reports ANI.
The victim’s parents hailed the hanging and said that their daughter had finally got the justice, over seven years after she was brutally raped on the intervening night of 16 December 2012 in a moving bus. She later succumbed to her injuries in a Singapore hospital.
A Delhi court had on 5 March issued the death warrant for the four convicts - Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta, and Mukesh Singh - to be executed at 5.30 am on 20 March.
Six people including a juvenile were arrested for brutal rape and murder. One of the convicts, Ram Singh, had committed suicide in the jail while a juvenile convict was released after serving three years in a juvenile home.
