Jyotiraditya Scindia with Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader from Madhya Pradesh, has been appointed as the new civil aviation minister of India. The Rajya Sabha member is one of the major faces to have been inducted in the cabinet today.
His father, Madhavrao Scindia, had served as the civil aviation minister in the PV Narasimha Rao government.
Sources say Jyotiraditya Scindia was given the Civil Aviation Ministry as the top BJP leadership believes that the civil aviation sector needs a young, fresh, dynamic face that can take forward the needs of the country in the context of New India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expanded his cabinet today (7 July) with the induction of 43 new faces. This marks the first major reshuffle in the Modi Cabinet after the NDA government won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
The list has a mix of youth and those who come with rich administrative experience, including former chief ministers. At the same time, 12 existing ministers resigned from the government before the swearing-in ceremony.
